Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport and self-defense system that originated in Japan and then developed in Brazil. It focuses on the use of leverage and technique to overcome an opponent. The goal of Jiu-Jitsu is to control and subdue an attacker by using joint locks and chokeholds. It is a physically demanding activity that requires strength, flexibility, and endurance. It can be trained and practiced in a sportive format, as well as a self-defense format. Jiu-Jitsu practitioners are awarded different colored belts to indicate their level of proficiency, with white being the lowest and black being the highest.
The curriculum includes training in throws, strikes, and submission holds and it also includes sparring and drilling. Jiu-Jitsu is not only a physical discipline, but also a mental one, where one needs to develop discipline, focus and self-control. It also promotes self-confidence, respect, humility and camaraderie among practitioners.
